Biographical Information

Ruben Tous got his Ph.D in Computer Science and Digital Communication from UPF (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain) in 2006. Previously he got degrees in Computer Science (UPC, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain) and Business Management (UPF). From 2000 to 2001 he worked as a consultant at CapGemini Ernst&Young in Barcelona, From 2001 to 2005 he worked at the Department of Techology of UPF. Since 2006 he is a researcher at DMAG (Distributed Multimedia Applications Group) of the Department of Computer Architecture of UPC and an Assistant Professor.

He is an expert for the Asociación española de Normalización y Certificación (AENOR) and has been participating as spanish delegate in ISO/MPEG and ISO/JPEG. He is editor of Part 12 of the MPEG-7 standard (MPEG Query Format, ISO/IEC 15938-12:2008) and the Part 3 of the JPEG's JPSearch standard (ISO/IEC 24800-3:2008). He is participating in W3C's Media Annotations Working Group. He is currently, or has been in the past, involved in an european 6th FWP Integrated Project (AXMEDIS), two european networks of excellence (VISNET and VISNET II) and four projects funded by the spanish government (Area2000, E2E-RM, DRM-MM and SEGURA).

He is interested in algorithms and data structures, data integration, data semantics, semantic alignment, knowledge representation and reasoning for multimedia understanding (multimedia ontologies) and multimedia databases and query languages.

  • Contorsion Project (2004-2005): Design and implementation of a Semantic XPath Processor using OWL and RDF. Project supported by VISNET, the Networked Audiovisual Media Technologies European Network of Excellence (6th framework programme).
  • Advanced Metasearch Project (2001-2003): Advanced Metasearch project is part of the research work being done in the information search and retrieval area by the Distributed Multimedia Applications Group (DMAG) at the Technology Department of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The project consists in putting to work some of the group ideas in the field of metasearch by developing some practical applications like for e.g. a news search engine. The engine can help users in finding very specific news from online newspapers around the world, with the posibility to specify very precise conditions about the information that they are looking for. Furthermore the system offers the guarantee that the searched news include the latest ones published by the sources.
